1. What is Bagasse?
Bagasse is sugar cane fiber waste left after juice extraction.
2. Why Bagasse?
Sugar cane is a readily renewable resource, grown extensively in a number of developing countries. After the sugar cane is juiced, the use of the fiber waste provides a value-added product from what is generally considered a waste product. When sugar cane fiber can be turned into products normally made from plastic or paper, an additional benefit is the elimination of the pollution from normal burning of the pulp.
For single-use products, it provides an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional plastic and paper food service and packaging disposables. Sugarcane fiber composts readily, as it is similar to any other fibrous garden waste, and normally biodegrades within 30-90 days.
